Birth of T.V.Munson, American horticulturalist. Saved European vineyards from total devastation from the phylloxera pest by grafting European vines onto American rootstocks. As a result of his work, European grape growers in the 1880s and ’90s imported huge numbers of American vines, mostly from Texas and Missouri. For his work, France named him a Chevalier du Merité Agricole of the French Legion of Honor. Died in 1913 in Denison, Texas.
Death of world-altering French chemist Louis Pasteur (b. Dec. 27, 1822). His scientific studies led him to determine the process of fermentation, in which yeast is transformed into alcohol and carbon dioxide. His theories on vinification and conservation of wines formed the basis of modern-day wine microbiology.
